Garden catchup

Don't be fooled by some of these blue sky photos: as I type it's very grey and miserable out there, but who knows what is round the corner?

Yes, we've been readying the garden in anticipation of the summer. Meanwhile nature's been working hard all by herself.

Home-grown cauliflower, and it tasted good! Memories of my Dad winning a prize in a Congleton flower and vegetable show years ago. Sadly I can't find the photo.
A favourite of ours: Swiss chard
At the last count there were seven artichokes hidden away in the artichoke jungle!
The fig tree is in bud. We've had figs these last two years but not good enough to eat. Maybe this year?
Not the prettiest plant but our lemon tree keeps on giving. There are plenty more flowers and baby lemons on their way.
The apple and plum trees are blossoming well

The forsythia is outstanding one more time...
...as is the wisteria, despite being in the shade.
Lots of seeds in our new acquisition. They seem to be taking their time though.
Tine's trying something new with the strawberries, to ward off snails and give the fruit a soft landing.
Hanging basket courtesy of Asda on our last visit...
...and Tine's own assortment.
New for 2016? Fencing and pebbles to tidy up the side of the house nearest the beach.

The last couple of days ...

... are always a bit rushed, checking we've got all the shopping we need, leaving the caravan neat & tidy for any visitors. This time we did some visiting too!

But before then Alfie helped with the Crabbies/beer run at the cash'n'carry
His reward? A babyccino at Don't Tell Titus in Saltaire, plus the froth from Mamie's cappuccino of course
Saw this sign at the hairdresser's next door. Note the date!
We did an overnight at Jim & Les's and next day we enjoyed a walk around Oakwell Hall...
with its English Civil War and Brontë connections.
Look who came to see us whilst we had our morning coffees/chocolates: a robin, some say the symbol of deceased ones, and Grandad's favourite bird

On our last morning Phil took us on a lovely drive up into the Peak District. Being Good Friday it was really busy so we'll have to do more exploration another time.

Howden Dam, near to Ladybower Lake...

Center Parcs (2)

Usually known for its wet weather we were very lucky with our stay in the Lake District, with plenty of blue skies and mild temperatures.

The park is in woodlands...

...with great views over the valley when you explore.
'Why did the ducks cross the road?'
To go for a dip of course!
Alfie loved the play park...
...Nadine & Simon too.
The Subtropical Swimming Paradise, by day...
...and by night.
It felt extra-special to go for an evening swim

Next day the dolphants (as Alfie warily calls them) were all lined up ready for more fun times!

Center Parcs (1)

(Yes, I know, but that's how it's spelt!)

Center Parcs never really appealed to me (not being the big sportsman) but I would thoroughly recommend it.

This was our lodge: three bedrooms and room on the landing for Alfie's cot
Our neighbours...

...and our visitors

There were lots of woodlands to explore...
...especially with a stick...
...and plenty of time for a beer or a glass of wine.
Inside was pretty spacious too!

Do you think I'll get commision?

Journey to the Lake District

This last couple of years we have gone a bit digital at Christmas and bought our crew vouchers/tickets etc. This time we were able to share our gift to Nad & Si and Phil: a weekend at Centre Parcs in the Lake District.

The traditional mug of tea and a bacon butty at the old bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale. As good as ever!
Obviously my eyes were on the M6 traffic but my photographic friend took a few moving shots

Arriving in the area a little early we decided to visit Penrith which was new to both of us
The ruins of Penrith Castle were very interesting in red stone

There's a little bit of history here: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/penrith-castle/history/

A very pleasant way to spend some time...
