Castle Howard

A belated Happy New Year to my faithful followers, and apologies for the delay: intermittent internet to blame!

All those years living in Yorkshire we never visited Castle Howard, so when friends Peter & Lindsey asked us to accompany them we jumped at the chance.

Perhaps we didn’t have the best weather but it’s still a splendid building beneath the big clouds

Pete & Tine striding forth!

Once inside the building you can’t fail to be impressed

An ancient fireplace from up close…

…and from above.

Looking up instead you can see the hand-painted dome, destroyed in a huge fire in 1940 but since lovingly restored

Long corridors with busts of earlier family members…

…and stained-glass windows.

Of course Castle Howard was the setting for the TV series Brideshead Revisited in 1981…

…and there was a costume display including those of the two main actors.

This dining table is used for special occasions, the Howard Family still resident at the house

I wouldn’t fancy the job of polishing these floors

The house has its own church

Back outside, and even the ‘back door’ is impressive

There are many smaller buildings in the grounds including the Temple of the Four Winds, quite a site for refreshment and reading in times gone by. Sadly no longer visitable.

Perhaps most famously the fountains…

…and this Gang of Four!
