Chåteau de la Brunière

Each September heritage weekend (journées du patrimoine) has old properties opening their doors to the public. This year we decided to visit le Château de la Brunière in Givres, just a short drive away from La Tranche.

Although we couldn't visit the interior the present owner happily walked a group of us around the château
There's usually water in the moat but not this year!
The present château was rebuilt in the 16th century
A sun-dial hidden in one of the walls

Only the main section and one of the side wings remain although it was originally a U-shape building.

There's a very curious chimney-pot...
...that looked like it could very easily tumble!
The other side of the wing recently restored...

We stepped inside the round tower which had once been used as a barn...
...its intricate ceiling wooden frame now a home for owls.
