There’s copper in them there hills

Being an Englishman in France it amused me that Martin took us to Parys one day (and yes, that’s spelled correctly). To be more accurate he took us to Parys Mountain, all of 138m high!

An artist’s impression of the site where metals have been excavated since the Bronze Age.

In the 18th & 19th centuries it became the largest copper mine in the world.

The Great Opencast was shaped by miners with picks, shovels and gunpowder…

…and the colors are magnificent, even on a dull day.

We ventured to the bottom

Oops, that’s another bottom: Tine peering through an old entrance to one of the mines.

There wasn’t much to be seen inside but apparently the underground remains are very extensive

The old mill that was used to pump water out of the mines…

…and Martin, our friend and knowledgeable guide!
