Brazilian Carnival weekend

Well, how can I follow my two guest bloggers who have done such a magnificent job? Well, I'll try my best...
.
You might remember a couple of weeks ago I wrote about the fire dancing display to mark the opening of the summer season. The entertainments officer announced then that the council had organised activities for each weekend throughout the season, an impressive plan for a small town. Not everybody is a big fan of the new mayor, but he and his team do seem to be getting things moving.

So, a couple of weeks ago we had a Brazilian Carnival with three samba bands (including dancing girls) and a not-very-exciting float, parading through the town and eventually all joining together on the beach for a combined display. The music was loud and addictive and the crowds followed the bands, enjoying the hot sunshine but keeping an eye on some VERY threatening dark clouds on their way!

Another week, another guest bloggist!

Another retrospective, long distance blog! LCA at the keyboard. Well how can you add to the blog, whilst staying with D&M, when suffering from ' 2B2B ' syndrome? (That's 'too busy to blog'.)
.
And now back home, having had about 5 hrs sleep after a lovely evening with D&M's friends, I'm nearly too tired to blog. So, I'll go for a very brief resume of the last 4 packed days:
- problem free travel until the autoroute, when I managed to 'natter' so much that we missed the exit, causing a rather longer journey back to La Tranche
- beautiful sunny weather throughout
- trips to Les Sables & La Roche for Martine's English classes. At the latter, I was part of the lesson, when the students asked me questions. 2 lovely groups of students
- Dave & I took a walk around La Chaume - fishing boats, boulistes, the mural and wisteria in the gardens - cycling to various places; getting the bread; La Paillote to see Matt hard at work preparing for the season; into town; to the jetty; (quicker than walking & I can cope 'cos it's flat & there are cycle paths to keep me away from the traffic - or is it to keep the traffic safe from me?)

- meeting Martine & Dave's friends
- watching a recent French comedy film, which I more or less understood, tho' I didn't get all the local slang! - delicious meals 'at home' , including a BBQ

- delicious meals 'au restuarant' (merci Matt for 1 of these)

- delicious meal at friends (merci Sue & Nick)
.
Seems to be rather an emphasis on the food, but it was good! Thanks for a brill visit. Good luck to Matt (& Martine) for the opening of La Paillote on Thursday.

Long distance blog hacker

Nad here, hacking the blog from Angleterre. Due to Papa's impressive prolific blogging of late, my holidays have been well documented so I can focus on my highlights and best bits; a bit like the short film they play as contestants leave the Big Brother house!
.
Food wars - I'm not sure I've ever eaten so well! Due to the fact Loulou, Sylvie, Caroline and Remi were on holiday too, we had a lot of shared meals at alternating houses. On the day of their arrival we were slightly concerned about having enough food so decided to wow them with a stunning pudding. Maman pulled a blinder with enormous and delicious profiteroles, but this started the ball rolling with pudding wars... Having in the past had various food competitions (remembering the rice pudding stand off), an unofficial war was waged when Loulou presented us with a beautiful tarte aux pommes the next night. We didn't take this lying down and retaliated the next day with the stunning pear and chocolate charlotte which you've already seen. The war raged on and whilst Loulou's tartes were undoubtedly delicious, the phrase one trick pony comes to mind.... I think it's safe to say we won! :) Thanks to Jodi for her almond biscuit and gooey brownie recipes :) Unfortunately, pudding wars, wine and cheese have taken their toll and I must go into serious starvation mode in preparation for summer!
.
Rock star boyfriend - A personal favourite moment was spotting Simon and his band Laruso in the Kerrang rock chart! I'd heard the video of their new single, 1998, had made the chart at number 38 so when I noticed it was on, I made Papa and Gill sit and watch. My heart was racing as track 39 finished but then cut to an advert break. I tried to keep a lid on my palpitations until 38 came... and went. Without Laruso. Gill left; I pretended not to be ultra disappointed UNTIL at 37 in came their video! Papa's quick thinking meant we could record it to show to Maman when she got home from work. It was a VERY exciting moment, seeing them on actual TV and not just a copy of the video! Look out for them on Kerrang TV and radio, Scuzz, Rock Sounds Magazine and who knows where next! Single out May 4th :)

.
The zoo - We made a trip to the Zoo in Les Sables, just under an hour away up the coast. I've always seen the posters advertising this zoo, but had developed the opinion it wasn't a very good zoo for some reason. I think we all had slightly low expectations as we arrived, but in actual fact it was an excellent zoo. The variety of animals was really interesting with some exotic species you don't always expect to see. I really enjoyed seeing the tigers as I'm not sure I've seen them in captivity before. We got there around lunch time and so decided to sit and have our picnic at a table near the gibbon islands. As we sat down we kept hearing the most raucous noise which we couldn't assign to a specific animal. Before long we realised that it was frogs, and then we noticed that the moats which surrounded the monkey/ape islands were hopping with frogs, all very noisily trying to impress their mates! Once you noticed them, the water was moving so much and you could see the pockets of air under their chins filling as they shrieked and chuntered! The zoo in general was clean and well looked after. I loved the fact that lots of enclosures were open air and not behind bars/windows. There were even some small monkeys who had free reign of the zoo in the summer months! However, my personal favourites were definitely the giraffes. There were five adults and two babies who had only been born in January! The daddy giraffe was clearly in the mood for making more babies though which caused a little amusement and embarrassment! Not only were there so many giraffes, but on a couple of occasions, they all started to run around their enclosure. I'd never seen giraffes so active, it was amazing. All in all, an excellent day out.

.
I had a really fab holiday. I loved seeing les Alexandres, having Gill down for Easter weekend was great and I thoroughly enjoyed going out for her birthday dinner (yes, more food!). The weather alternated between glorious and rainy, but I still managed to burn my nose a little! I was sad to leave, as always, but already counting down till May and Phil's birthday celebrations in Cheshire. And summer's not that far away, is it...?

Easter celebrations continue (3)

Another day, another celebration - this time it's Easter Sunday at Jean & Monique's and there's a good crowd with quite a few of Monique's family that we haven't seen for a while. If it looks like we're all having fun, that's because we really did!
.
As you can see, some people prefer to watch from above: Loulou and Cécile overseeing the preparations from the top of the stairs and Monique clapping her hands to help Jean-Francois keep time on the old accordion!! Others are quite obviously born entertainers, alias Caroline and Jean-Francois who really contributed to the lovely ambiance playing lively music, including waltzes which Sylvie and Tine couldn't resist.
.
Volleyball was also on the menu, starting with passing between a few people and ending up with a net being erected for a proper match, though all in very good, easy-going atmosphere. Nadine looks like she knows what she's doing, doesn't she? (Nadine: She didn't...)

Easter celebrations continue (2)

Some photos to show what a great time we had on Easter Saturday at Jean-Pierre & Catherine's. We had aperitifs outside but the planned BBQ was abandoned as it was a little cool. As you can see an amazing table was set for us all to celebrate Easter AND JP's birthday, the week before.

Photo 2 shows Jean and Sylvie enjoying a glass of white wine in the new billiard room, secretly decorated and furnished for JP last Christmas. Onto the meal and in Photo 3 you can see cousin Philippe and Laeticia awaiting their oysters, and yes I DID have one (to prove a point!)

In the next photo from left to right there's Sylvie, Alizée, Cédric, Julie and JP; then proud Grandmother Catherine watching over Laeticia and Camille now 11 months old.

In the evening we ate at Loulou & Sylvie's then walked to the jetty for the town's official opening of the holiday season with fire dancers and great music. The fireworks were actually held by the dancers - OUCH!

Easter celebrations continue (1)

Here you have evidence of the eating, drinking and general merriment I alluded to in the previous post.
.
Nadine made a superb Pear & Chocolate Charlotte one evening and here you see Caro looking on longingly! We also made a strawberry jelly for Rémi and Tine taught him how to 'eat' it through a straw - I think it reminded her of our kids' birthday parties when they were younger!
.
Next day we were blessed with blue skies again and we ate outside at l'Amendier where L&S stay (and where we used to stay many years ago). Caro played her accordion and there were willing dancers to the Breton music - here you see Tine & Sylvie.
.
Cousin Jean next, taking his serving of aperitif VERY seriously, then Loulou removing a layer in the lovely sun. Finally the siesta area, some snoozing whilst more energetic souls played volley ball.

Happy Easter/Joyeuses Pâques

Not only have we got Nadine with us but also Loulou, Sylvie and family arrived last Sunday, and Gill is here all the way from Brittany. As you can imagine this all involves a lot of eating, drinking and general merriment - it's a hard life..
.
Young Rémi has been in the sea most days, sometimes fully clothed to try and combat the 13°C temperature of the water. The sun has definitely got some heat to it nowadays but the air is still cool and I wouldn't fancy getting dried and changed in it.
.
Loulou is doing really well after his hip replacement operation and is walking with one (sometimes no) stick. Sadly they're off back to Figeac tomorrow but it won't be too long until their summer holiday here.
.
Nadine wanted to treat us to a drink Chez David, right on the sea front. We were joined by our 'new' friends Guy & Isabelle. Thanks for the drink, Guy; Nad, you owe us one!!
.
Finalliy I couldn't resist taking a photo of this beautiful wisteria spotted growing in La Tranche. Its colour is actually deeper than in the photo but I've included it anyway.
.
Happy Easter, everyone!

Well and truly shuttered

And what have I been up to these last few weeks? Well, boringly I've been busy varnishing/staining the shutters and window frames. As each side needs two coats it takes four days to turn around one pair of shutters. We have 16 shutters (and three pairs of trestles), you can do the Maths yourselves (taking into account rain showers, of course!)

Then there's the front door, the beams around there and the patio eating area plus the gates. I could finish by the summer!!

The lizard in photo 2 enjoyed the ride from the house to the trestles and had to be 'encouraged' to run away - better then being painted I should think!

Photos 3 & 4 show you before and after - hope you are impressed!

Meanwhile Tine has been busy preparing the ground for the swimming pool that Nad & Si brought us last summer - you can just see the circle behind the trestles in the 1st photo. We'll start to fill that in May. Can't wait!
